HOW TO GET INTO ART LICENSING

In 2020, I started hand lettering as a way to have my own creative outlet outside of my 9 to 5 job. By 2024, I have created over 100+ pieces of hand lettering work. With all this artwork just sitting on my hard drive, I thought to myself “What can I do with all this artwork? Can I make a profit from it somehow?”. I learned about art licensing when I saw artists on Instagram have their artwork be on the shelves at large retailers. Art licensing is when a company or even an individual asks you, the artist, to buy your rights to your artwork to use on their products like greeting cards or anywhere that really has a surface to show artwork. As I asked questions to my fellow peers and did my online research, I learned how to build an art licensing portfolio, the different pricing structures and contracts. I will say that art licensing takes a long time to see results - it’s a long game to play but one of the ways you can diversify your income streams as a freelance creative.

For me, it was difficult to find information on art licensing. It took a lot of time in finding the right answers so I created my own guidebook. If you are interested in getting into art licensing and want to learn more, you can download the FREE guide below.
