HOSTING MY FIRST HAND LETTERING WORKSHOP

I was always nervous about teaching a hand lettering workshop because I had no teaching experience for it and then I thought to myself, “Wait a minute, I totally can because I’ve taught other things before!”. Growing up, being the oldest of three other siblings meant that I was constantly teaching my younger siblings how to do certain things. In high school, I remember even teaching Chinese 3 in my senior year. In college, I worked at a day-care which meant teaching was also required. As I remembered these moments, I finally had the confidence to teach my first hand lettering workshop this year which was one of my bucket list items for the year. The workshop was taught in person at a local calligraphy studio in San Diego, CA called Strenger Studio with my friend, Jojo Wang who is also a hand lettering artist. The workshop was titled “Covered In Letters: Journal Lettering Workshop”, where we taught a group of beginner hand lettering students to draw sans serif and script lettering. After we taught the two styles, we asked the students to hand letter a cover design onto kraft journal notebooks using Posca pens. All the materials were provided along with a workbook.

It was definitely a great learning experience for me and also a great way to connect with local people who live in San Diego. I would definitely love to do this more often.

Based on this experience, I am hosting a virtual hand lettering workshop in July. This time, I will be teaching a more techiniqcal workshop called 3D Lettering with Texture in Procreate. The reason why I want to do a virtual one is because I received some interest in attending workshops from people who don’t live locally in San Diego. By hosting this workshop virtually, it will hopefully allow me to reach a wider audience! If you’re interested, read the information below.
